The whole history of the Russian people convinced him that any weakening of state power led to the threat of external invasion and foreign conquest. Therefore, the strength and power of the state has acquired for the people the character of a self-sufficient and determining substance.
The reforms of Peter I turned Russia into a strong state. But they split society. Lenin proposed a socially expensive but realistic way to overcome the split, and so the Bolsheviks won. However, the process of gradual bourgeoisization of the Soviet bureaucracy in the future, according to Berdyaev, will pose a threat to communism.
