Abstract

The subject of the research in this article is the features of the prototypes of the modern type of criminal punishment in the form of forced labor in the pre-revolutionary and Soviet periods of the development of domestic criminal law.

The authors analyze the origins of the appearance and subsequent development of this type of punishment, conduct a study of straitjackets, workhouses and correctional prison departments, forced labor camps as a prototype of modern correctional centers. The author identifies the main problems and difficulties associated with the execution of punishment in the form of forced labor in the studied periods.

The scientific analysis of the indicated problems is conditioned, among other things, by the search for ways to optimize the studied type of criminal punishment at the present stage.
